China of course. Here is an
interesting video of a manufacturing facility in China, showing their shop and happy workers assembling trimmers and pots. Some of those components look really good. I need to get some joystick industrial pots that's how I stumbled across this. Prices are generally very reasonable even better then Jameco. International shipping and wire transfers is what you end up paying an arm and a leg for. You have to understand that these people deal in 1,000s of units per order, so paying $100 in fees is chump change. But I would rather do that then buy another component at Radio Shack, I swear they have the shittiest, most expensive parts on the planet.

I didn't see one of those people with a smile on there face. How can you be sure they were happy? Yes a place with cheaper parts and better quality besides RS would be great. Bulk would be nice but I dont think I would go thru 500 switches in my life time. I just need to find some one that is into this hobby that will go halves on bulk. Then i would be set.

Hehehe, yeah I was just poking fun. They all do look pretty serious. I am working a way to have cheap parts available through getlofi store, but that is still in the works. Even Jameco bulk prices don't reflect the true value of those parts. There ar efew eBay sellers that do a great job is selling lots, I will do a story on those soon.

You can get the joystick parts out of playstation controllers with the joysticks in them. I have four of them lying around which I got out of broken controllers.

back when I was designing electronics at Boeing twenty years ago, Arrow used to run a retail storefront in Bellevue where I could get components in prototype quantities. It doesn't look like they have the storefronts any more, but it does look like you can still get commercial-grade components in arbitrarily small quantities through their website.
