Wooden knobs.

Using wood in electronics is not new, however I am still fascinated by the idea. Some people may frown and even consider it "ghetto", however the truth is that only the Super Mega Ultra Hi-Fi audio equipment uses them as seen on this website. The knobs can be very nice looking if manufactured and treated correctly. I am not even going guess how much they would sell for on the Hi-Fi tube amp market, because apparently they also contribute to the overall sound making it even more Hi-Fi. To make something like that one needs a lathe and a place to make a huge noisy mess. A word of caution, do not attempt to make these by rigging a handdrill sideways and using a flat-blade screwdriver to shape the wood. One trip the the ER may cost a lot more then getting a mini lathe ( unless you live in a country that has a public health care system ) and all the needed tools online, also please wear goggles.

    Whaaaaaaaaaa?!?!?! http://www.boingboing.net/2005/11/07/astronomically_overp.html
Oh the irony, I was on BoingBoing 15 minutes before I posted about the knobs. Now I check it and see that someone there did a writeup about it as well. Actually found the link last nite and saved it as a draft. Oh well, probably just a coincidence.

The MAKEzine blog has posted a couple of different links to ways to DIY a lathe.

    Treadle lathe

    Motor driven lathe

Good idea by the way. Save $$$ on knobs and enjoy a new crafty hobby. I'm thinking that if you wanted to just make knobs, some kind if mini/micro lathe should be pretty cheap to get started.

you could make knobs out of pretty much anything if you could find those brass inserts.

i would think you could also get awesome knobs with a plug cutter and some choice hardwood. layered even. still need those inserts though.

Awesome knob=lump of two-part epoxy jammed onto the shaft of the pot.

The yankee work shop is going to have a show on using a lathe. I was watching today on one of the PBS type stations and said they were going to be going into that next time. To get idea's as hokkie as it can sound. Maybe check out the Yankee Work Shop
