Back in the day

In 1998 to be more specific Matmos was going things that a lot of people are trying to do today. Take this sound sample from Verber: Synapse, track 9 from what looks like their first Release. It sure as hell sounds a lot like an opto theremin or some sort of a DIY oscillator, possibly even with a ring mod effect. No delay or anything and its mixed pretty dry and up front. I do enjoy their dynamics despite the constant repetition. Not just noise, but something that is constructive and has a point. Matmos' discography can be found here along with more info on the band.

Here's a nice Matmos interview from 2004, with a focus on the sounds/technology they use. Fantastic group, and Drew Daniel's solo Soft Pink Truth stuff is well worth checking out, too.

on that track, the bass sound is: “amplified synapse of crayfish neural tissue”

I dont know if you know, and
I dont know if back then
    they did this, but>
theyve been known to use snails "walking" through a (RF- or IR-)beam and speeding that up. Which fits with the description of a theremin through a ring mod.
