RCA Voice recorders are
fairly cheap and readily available. The one I used for this project was an RP5007 I believe, purchased for $5.00 at a second hand store. The bends implemented on this unit were all short circuiting of the Smart Media card slot. This was pretty much the only place that I could solder wire to as well. Of course there is no room for switches inside case, so external breakout box was used and all the wires were fed back through the opening in the case. The recorder itself was then super glued pretty hard to the project box. The sounds are pretty intense, lots of cool glitch loops, robotic sounds, and general Speak and Spell like glitches. I did record
a video of the device being messed around with and there is an
extensive gallery detailing the construction. Enjoy.

whoa neat.. i was wodering if these could be bent.
The sound level on the video is a bit high though! Do you plug straight into the mic in jack on the camera?
and the video is 13 minutes lol what are you smoking ;p

Yes, sorry about the sound level. The output quality if very nice though. I was plugged into the mic hack on the computer instead of the camera. The video was longer I had to edit it btw, and I wish I was smoking something, but I think I may have been drinking a beer instead.

Mind if I ask what type of toggle switches those were and where you purchased them?
And how about www.quicktime.com? Please don't waste comment space.

The switches are from HongKongSuper seller, bought on ebay. They are just (On-On) no center position. All they do is short the pins on the card slot.
His switches are discussed below in another post.
As far as the quitime thing, I get that alot, however no question is too silly and unfortunately quicktime does not come individually, you have to bundle install iTunes, thats where the confusion may come from.

Though they do a pretty good job of hiding it, you can actually get a standalone Quicktime installer here.

Cheers!

Would these be any good for music ?
Maybe combined with a Bent SK-1 for creating loops ?
I suspect the frequency range is relatively limited.

Thanks everyone for commenting and providing great feedback. I wish I knew that Make was gonna post on this, that way I could've prettied things up a little bit more, but oh well.
The frequency range of the recorder is not bad at all and combining it with a Bent SK-1 is something that I will have to look into.

I'm not a tech/electrician-
just interested in the device as is.
I bought one these without an owners manual, and I don't know how to
format the disk when it flashes "FOR"
Any suggestions?

Hey Jeff, you can get the manual for those recorders in the PDF format. FOR means Formating or erasing the card for use. I think you should just let it finish formating cause that takes a few minutes atleast. Some have a max capacity of 8-16 mb so don't try anything bigger. If INIT is flashing that means the card has never been formatted so hold the ERASE ( scissor ) button for a few seconds to start the FOR process. Hope this helps. Let me know otherwise.
