Weller Cordless soldering iron

Holly Crap this thing is sweet! Today I saw these 6 Watt cordless soldering irons at my local hardware chain on sale for $10.49 and had give one a whirl. Impressed was I indeed. After initial 15 seconds of holding down the button the tip got very hot and melted huge blobs of solder with no sweat at 900 Degrees. The package says that it will do about 120 joints on 3 AA batteries, which is quite a bit really, but those kinds of specs are always overblown. To boot there is a $3 rebate from Weller until end of May. With summer coming up I would suggest for everyone to get out and work on projects outside, in parks and such. So go and check your local store for one or google for Weller BP645MP or use my Amazon link: Weller Cordless soldering iron.

Doh! I wish I would have known about this a few days ago, I just picked up a plug-in Weller from Lowe's last week. But this one does look pretty cool, so I guess it wouldnt hurt to have two!

Well yes, I would not consider getting rid of a corded soldering iron, but this is just for those occasional times when you only need a few dosen joints.

Aren't solder fume known cause cancer in the state of California or something. Glad I don't live there. Phew!

You already pointed out the shortcomings of a cheap soldering iron... if you're in the market for a good, inexpensive soldering iron, get an Antex. They're british and a little hard to find here in the States but well worth the $ and effort. I've had the same iron for 10 years (and the same tip) and have never had a complaint. Plus it's light weight and small.
    Here's a US dealer:

Wow, those are sweet. Also in defence of the cordless soldering iron, it is a Weller after all.

Yeah, but 6 volts won't go far if you are trying to heat larger surfaces/ components.

Well yes, that job should be done by a regular soldering iron. Also to note that it is actually 4.5 Volts and 6 Watts. I would not suggest building a point to point Tube Amp with this thing, but it doesn't take much to solder ICs and small wires.

Seriously, drop some cash and get one of these:

Best investment ever. No need to use a stupid sponge to clean the tip. Use one of those "Model 460 Tip Cleaner" to do the job.

If you plan on branching out and doing something more interesting than circuit bending a creatoy, that soldering iron is a must. I've used so many in the past 15 years, this one takes the cake for the price.
