What Tape canvas sounds like.
Well finally we have a video of what happens when you dettach a tapehead and run it over a strip of tape. Granted I would like to hear more then one slice of tape, but this is good for now. As someone commented it sounds a lot like a record being scratched, not extremely pleasant, but maybe some sine waves should be tried instead of the conventional music. [Link Via Make:Blog, Thanks!]
I notice that in the picture they have stuck the tape to a sheet of paper. It's trickier, but you can get better results if you suspend the tape from both ends, and put it under a very little bit of tension.
The reading head needs to be fairly precisely aligned with the tape, any sideways movement and the sound disappears immediately, and this is really difficult on a flat surface. But the head often has little guiding prongs, or you can add some, so if the tape is suspended, it's free to slip sideways (steered into the right place by the prongs) and you get more sound.

Perhaps soon someone will be posting their own version of Laurie Anderson's tape-bow violin?

Yes, or perhaps I should start a tape/musique concrete blog. There seems to be alot of interest in that.
