Solar Powered Atari Punk Console

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Here is yet another properboy a.p.c. build, although I have done many with light controlled resistors, this is a first attempt at a solar powered synth. The plan was to create a small drone-unit that I could leave in my window. I wanted this little box to power up every morning and going to sleep at night. Wall-wart connection is included so it can still be played on cloudy days. PCB is by getlofi, solar cell from the shack (way overpriced), enclosure rescued from another project, some components recycled from busted electronics in my workshop.

L.D.R. control of A.P.C. by properboy

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Message from your operator: Its a pleasure to announce our new contributor Steve Stoll aka properboy. Steve has come a long way in his pedal creations and modifying GetLoFi circuits to suit his creative needs. His videos are full of explanations and whacky designs, so instead of us blogging about his achievements, let the man speak for himself. Enjoy.

Here is one of my properboy A.P.C.’s that I put together using a Getlofi board, some vintage Sozo caps and various other recycled bits. My client wanted to be able to control the unit with two 16mm projectors and I came up with the idea of mounting light dependent resistors inside of small metal enclosures that could be positioned anywhere in the performance space, distance from the mother unit is only limited by the length of audio cable available. The neat thing is this A.P.C. functions as a normal unit until the cables are patched in so it is kind of a dual purpose unit. I will surely expand on this concept in future designs as I can see a lot of potential for it.

Our friend Gretchen from Gearwire recently recorded and skillfully edited an interview with Hans Tammen at AES. Before watching this video I was not aware of Mr Tammen’s work and it is interesting to see his transformation to the computer world with MAX/MSP, while preserving the experimental aesthetics of his prepared guitar and a bunch of pedals. Love it or hate it this is a good example of Experimental Noise Music.
